Tuberculosis is still one of tt a most serious infectious diseases in Korea Tuberculosis in childhood is a, serious problem to Korean pediatricians. Miliary tubercubsi% one of the extrapulmonary tuberculosis, has been frequently observed in out-patient dispensaries or in-patient wards in Korea.. One clinical review-by Min et al. 101 was reported at the beginning of this year.
I have wm marized another 84 pediatric patients who were observed at Won ju Union Christian Hospital,
Wonju, Kang Won Do, a branch hospital of our Severance. The following results were obtained;
1. For 9 years and 3 months from jam 1960 to March of 1969, 84 cases of miliary tuberculosis were-
observed which was 1.7% of the total admitted pediatic patients(4, 991) during the above period.
2. The yougest one was a 5 month old female infant and the oldest was a 13 year old boy.
3. 40.5 % of the total patients were between 3 and 6 years of age. 10.7 % were under one year of
age. The ratio of male to female was 1.4 to 1.
4. 54 patients (649ol) were observed during the spring and the summer.
5. only 18 % of the patients had definite contact history with tuberculous family.
6. Their chief complaints on admission were fever, cough, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain,_ fatigue, etc in that order.
7. Negative tuberculin responses (O-T Mx, 5TU) were found in more than 50 % of patients.
8. Tuberculous meningitis was the most frequent complication in miliary tuberculosis. All tuberculous-complication were found in 50 % of total patients.
9. Treatment was done with triple therapy adding corticosteroid. INH; 20 mg/kg/day, PAS; 200 mg/ kg/day, SM; 20^-40 mg/kg/day and prednisolone; 1^-2 mg/kg/day were principle dosages.
10. Death rate was 12 %. 6 out of 10 deaths died within 3 day after admission. 8 out of 10 deaths. were complicated cases of tuberculous meningitis. 7 out of 10 deaths were male patients.
